US Congressman. He was born in Sharpsburg Maryland but moved with his parents to Zanesville, Ohio as a young boy. He worked as a blacksmith and as a merchant before being admitted to the bar in 1824. In 1832 he moved to Coshocton, Ohio where he opened a law practice. Shortly after his arrival there he was elected to Congress as an Anti-Jacksonian and served in the Twenty-third Congress from 1833 to 1835. He was reelected as a Whig and served another term that ended in 1837. He declined to seek political office again even though he was urged to run for a third term in Congress in 1836 and was asked to run for Governor of Ohio in 1844. He died in Coshocton.
