Golf pro. Mr. Shippen was the first American born African-American golf professional. He qualified for the 1896 U.S.Open, but the Scottish and English Pros refused to play with him.The head of the USGA ordered that if Shippen didn't play the Open would be cancelled.The tournament went on and Shippen finished fifth. He played in five other Opens. Shippen was Golf Pro at the Shady Rest Country Club, Scotch Plains,New Jersey from 1924 until 1960.
