US Senator. Known as the "wheel-horse of the Senate" because of his untiring work habits he represented the state of Ohio as a US Senator from 1815 to 1833. A native of Abington, Connecticut he worked is way through college by teaching school during the winter. After being admitted to the bar he moved to Ohio where he began practicing law first in Marietta before moving to St Clairsville where in 1810 he became a common pleas court judge. After serving three terms in the Senate he decided not to run for reelection in 1832 and returned to St. Clairsville where he continued to practice law while pursuing agricultural business interests. He did remain active in politics, however, serving as a presidential elector for the Whig Party in 1836.
