U.S. Congressman, Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Moving to Youngstown, Ohio, in 1837, he taught school and was Adams County Surveyor, in 1840. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1851 and commenced to practice law in West Union, Ohio, he was clerk of the court of common pleas and a member of the Ohio State House of Representatives, (1853-54). In 1857, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-fifth Congress, serving until 1859. During the Civil War, he served as Colonel in command of the 70th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Union Army and for meritorious services, was brevetted Brigadier General of U.S.Volunteers on March 13, 1865. After the war, he was again a member of the Ohio House of Representatives, (1868-71) and practiced law until his death at age 57.
