William Cummings moved to Kansas in 1855. He received bounty land from Joseph Mullins on 3 March 1855. In a document dated 1 May 1860 he received bounty land of 137 acres from a Joseph Mullins, private in Capt Moore's company, Virginia Militia, War of 1812. He platted the rich farming town of Cummings, originally called Cummingsville, located ten miles southwest of Atchison, Kansas, on December 16, 1872. As the town grew, the "ville" was dropped. William's father was born in Ohio and mother in Tennessee.

He married Sarah Ann Quiett, daughter of Hiram and Esther (Hamilton) Quiett on 21 September 1856. Unto this union were born six children:
Mary Cummings, born 8 September 1857
Martha Cummings, born 23 August 1859
Charles Cummings, born 25 December 1861
Isabella Cummings, born 13 February 1864
Britamore Cummings, born 20 Aug 1866
Willie Cummings, born July 1869

One of the oldest and most respected citizens in Atchison county, died Wednesday night at his home in Cummings. He was nearly 88 years old and had lived in Kansas since 1855.
