College Basketball Coach. For five seasons (1965 to 1970), he served as head coach of the Mississippi State University Bulldogs. He played collegiate basketball (guard position) at Mississippi State University and was a key member of the Bulldogs' squad which clinched the first tournament berth in the school's history in 1963, as he earned third-team All-SEC and Academic All-SEC recognition. In 1965, Gold succeeded Babe McCarthy at Mississippi State and at the age of twenty-three became the youngest head coach of a major program. During his tenure, he guided his teams to winning seasons in 1966 and 1967. Following a stint with Paducah Community College (1971 to 1973), he served as head coach at Mercer College (1973 to 1974), before beginning a career as a high school administrator in Kentucky. He was inducted into the Mississippi University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003. He died from cancer.
