Julius was born in Weesaw Township, Berrien County, Mich., to the late Emil and Elsie (Hauch) Backus. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church at Glendora, Mich., and was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bellmead, Texas. He grew up on a small Michigan farm, the middle child of five, before serving in the U.S. Army, to be stationed in Oklahoma and Texas.
On May 28, 1949, he married Helen Durkot in Glendora, Mich. They made their homes in Michigan, Florida, and Georgia, until finally retiring to Waco. Julius worked at many jobs, built and insulated homes, owned a craft store, and worked for a time in a lumber mill. Prior to retirement, he worked in a carpet yarn spinning mill. He was always building and creating fine woodwork and could fix anything. He lived out his faith in kindness, generosity and compassion.
Julius was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; and older brother, Alvin.
He is survived by daughters, Janet Hurta and husband, Glenn, of Waco, and Pamela Koch and husband, Tom, of Cornville, Ariz.; granddaughter, Nichole Nolan and husband, Fred, of El Mirage, Ariz.; great-granddaughter, Trinity Nolan, of El Mirage, Ariz.; grandson, Marcus Koch, of Tampa, Fla.; sisters, Hattie Friar, of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Edna Thompson and husband, Ed, of Woodway; brother, Russell Backus and wife, Lorraine, of Jackson, Mich.; numerous nieces and nephews, friends and church family; and special friend, Gloria Logue
