James Belohlavek, 20, of 1526 West 20th Street, Lorain, Ohio, was killed instantly in a motorcycle-automobile accident on late Sunday evening, shortly before midnight, on October 11, 1931, at Oberlin Avenue and West 19th Street, Lorain, Ohio.

Mrs. D. C. Lawless, 200 West Lake Avenue, Vermilion, Ohio, driver of the car, was held blameless in the accident by both police and Coroner T. A. Peebles.

According to the account that she gave to police, Mr. Belohlavek suddenly turned in front of her, and although she turned, too, in an effort to escape the crash, she could not avoid hitting him. The youth was crushed against a telephone pole.

Mr. Belohlavek, she said, was riding along beside her machine for several blocks as she was coming north on Oberlin Avenue. At 19th Street, he speeded up and then turned left in front of her to go onto 19th Street. She turned the same direction to avoid hitting him, but too late, she said. He was dragged 25 feet and his body badly crushed against the pole.

There were no eye witnesses to the accident, aside from Mrs. Lawless. Police tested her brakes and found them in good condition. Coroner Peebles held a post-mortem and gave a verdict of accidental death.

Mr. Belohlavek was an automobile mechanic and well-known as a motorcycle escort for funerals.

The funeral service was held at 10 a.m. on October 15, 1931, at Saints Cyril and Methodius Church. Reverend L. G. Virant officiated. Pallbears were as follows: Tony Engrish, Emil Kasti, James Muzik, Rudolph Trebonik, Leo Kudlo, and Archie Brown. Interment was under direction of Reichlin-Reidy-Scanlan. Burial was on October 15, 1931, in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain, Ohio.

[Contributor's note: I am inclined NOT to believe the accident report as given by Mrs. Lawless.
...In view of the location of Mr. Belohlavek's home on West 20th Street, it makes more sense that Mr. Belolavek was headed south on Oberlin Avenue, returning home from downtown Lorain, when Mrs. Lawless, heading north, turned west onto 19th Street, striking the oncoming motorcyclist head-on. Mr. Belohlavek had the right of way. ...
...All the more so, considering that Mr. Belohlavek was an experienced motorcycle escort for funeral processions! It's highly doubtful he would have acted so irresponsibly, riding for blocks aside of her car, then recklessly turning in front of her, as she described, especially during the pitch black of night.
...And if he was headed north on Oberlin Avenue, as she claimed, then he would have turned west onto 20th Street (the block before where the accident took place) to reach his home. Why would he bypass his own street? He was most probably heading home at that hour of the Sunday night.]
