Sylvia was raised and educated in the Deep River area. She graduated from high school in Naselle, Washington. She met Arvo Leinonen, who was from Quincy, Oregon, and they were united in marriage on June 19, 1937, in Longview, Washington. Their marriage was sealed on May 28, 1982, at the Temple of the Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints in Seattle, Washington.

They lived in Westport, Oregon, until 1955, when they moved to Winston, Oregon. In 1993, they moved to Sutherlin so they could live near their son, Gilbert. She was a member of the Sutherlin Ward of the Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints and was active in the Relief Society. She was also a member of the Gardening Club in Winston and volunteered at the Winston Chamber Of Commerce Visitors Center. As a young woman, Sylvia was a member of the Rebekah's Lodge. She enjoyed crocheting and other craftwork that made a house into a home.

Sylvia is survived by three sons, Donald Leinonen and his wife, Sophia of Beaverton, Oregon; Gilbert Leinonen and his wife, Linda of Sutherlin; and Robert Leinonen and his wife, Kathy of Roseburg.

She also leaves a brother, Everett Alder and his wife, Donna of Clatskanie, Oregon; grandchildren, Michael, Petros, Marshall and Christopher Leinonen; Evelinna Calder; Lisa Brown; Melissa Fisk; Amy Manolopoulos; and Linda Stricklin.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her husband, Arvo who passed away on January 1, 1998; a son, Dale Allen who passed away in 1941; a granddaughter, Jennifer; as well as four brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 25, 2005, at 2 p.m., at the Sutherlin Ward of the Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints. Interment will follow at the Valley View Cemetery.
