VIRGINIA BEACH - Elsie Mae Humphries of the 700 block of Arthur Ave. died July 21, 2003.
Born in Shiloh, N.C., she retired from the Virginia Beach schools after 30 years of service. She was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church, Holland Road, the Angelic Choir, Senior Choir and Nursing Unit. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Rosetta No. 19 OES PHA.
The widow of Vernon Humphries, she is survived by four daughters, Elsie V. Morgan, the Rev. Martha Burden and Odessa Woodhouse, all of Virginia Beach and Debora Gainey of Kingtree, S.C.; two sons, Elder Vernon Humphries and Doxie Humphries, both of Virginia Beach; a sister, Ella V. Holley of Virginia Beach; two brothers, James Holsey Sr. and Floyd Holsey, both of Virginia Beach; 10 grandchildren; and four aunts, Caldonia Hatchett, Francis Harris of Hampton, Addie Frazier of Camden, N.J. and Essie Holsey of Norfolk.
A funeral will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Piney Grove Baptist Church, Holland Road, Virginia Beach, by the Rev. Samuel K. Shaw III. Burial will be in Princess Anne Memorial Park. Community Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements.
