U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1830 and commenced to practice law in Richmond, Virginia. He also engaged in agricultural pursuits and was a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates, (1833-39). In 1839, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-sixth and Twenty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1843 and was reelected to the elected to the Thirtieth Congress, serving (1847-49). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was a member of Virginia State constitutional conventions, (1850-51) and resumed the practice of law until his death at age 66.
