Ropha first appeared in the 1850 U.S. Census for Pittsfield Twp., Lorain County, Ohio as 9 years old born in Ohio., living in the household of his father, Rawson, Ropha also, 43, a farmer born in MA and his mother, Betsy, 38, born in NY. Siblings were: Mary, 14, Edgar, 12, Andrew, 7, Helen, Francis, 3, William 6 mos., all born in Ohio. In the 1860 U.S. Census for Pittsfield Twp, the family was listed but Ropha who would have been 17 years old was not listed, apparently out of the household by that time.

Ropha enlisted for Civil War service, August 7, 1862, at Elyria, Ohio (Lorain County) as a private, in Company H, 103rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, for a term of 3 years. He was captured at Dandridge, Tennessee, January 17, 1864. He was listed as a prisoner of war at Andersonville, Georgia and paroled March 3, 1865 after prisoner of war releases were resumed, at Wilmington, North Carolina where he died March 15, 1865, from the illness contracted during his imprisonment. He was apparently originally buried in Wilmington National Cemetery, Wilmington, NC, Grave 1856 but removed and reinterred at the Jackson Family Cemetery at some point after the war. A headstone was ordered from the Veterans Administration, April 23, 2007, and set by August 14, 2007.

His name is inscribed on the base of the Civil War Monument in Pittsfield Township. His brother, Andrew, Company D, 178th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, died Feb. 2, 1865, at Jefferson Barracks, MO from illness.
