Dawson Houston “Jack” Gardner, the fourth born child of Martha A Pigg and Charles Austin Gardner, was born on November 28, 1915 in Dawson County, Texas. Jack married Ruth Tingey on December 23, 1939: daughter of Alma and Clissie (Hamson) Tingey. Ruth was born on September 20, 1914 in Box Elder, Utah. Ruth died on May 7, 1988 and is buried in Willamette National Cemetery in Multnomah County, Oregan. Dawson died on February 23, 1992 and is buried in Willamette National Cemetery in Multnomah County, Oregan. They had one child: Trudi Gardner.

A funeral for Dawson Houston ''Jack'' Gardner of Gresham, a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Bateman Carroll Funeral Chapel in Gresham. Private interment will be in Willamette National Cemetery.

Mr. Gardner died of congestive heart failure Sunday in a Portland care center. He was 76.

Born Nov. 28, 1915, in La Mesa, Texas, Mr. Gardner was raised and graduated from high school in Shawnee, Okla. He had attended the University of Oklahoma. Mr. Gardner enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1938 and married Ruth Tingey on Dec. 23, 1939, in Los Angeles. He earned his flight commission in 1943 and graduated from the Yale Flight School the following year.

A 27-year Air Force veteran, Mr. Gardner had been the recipient of several decorations and awards, including the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with five bronze oak leaf clusters. He had served in the Philippines, Saipan, Germany, Santa Rosa Island and in Greenland. Mr. Gardner retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1965. His wife died in 1988.

He is survived by his daughter, Trudi Crane of Gresham, and three grandchildren.

The family suggests remembrances be contributions to the Alzheimer's Association.
