"The balance of power on Common Council shifted to the Republican side Wednesday night as Britton G. Anderson of 503 Titus Ave. was elected and seated as Third Ward alderman. He replaces George Hughes of 510 W. Clinton St., a Democrat, who resigned last month. For the past 14 months the Council had seven Democratic and seven Republican aldermen. Anderson will serve until Dec. 31....Nominated by Fourth Ward Alderman Harold Hunt, Anderson won by a 7 to 6 vote over James Conley of 233 S. Albany St. Conley a former mayor and 12-year member of the Board of Public Works was nominated by Third Ward Alderman John F. Bangs, the county Democratic chairman. While the balloting was secret, the vote probably followed a straight party line....Anderson is owner and proprietor of the Meadow Court Motel and Royal Court Restaurant at 529 S. Meadow St. He has lived In Ithaca continuously since 1938, except for a period in military service. He was also a local resident from 1928 to 1931.
Anderson was born Oct 29 1909, In Bradford County, Pa. He was In the electrical contracting business here, 1938-57, first by himself and then in partnership with Charles Dassance, 1916-57, selling out to Dassance in the latter year. In 1954 he established the Meadow Court Motel. He built the new motel seven years later, adding the restaurant and expanding the property In 1965.
He was in service with the Seabces (Naval Construction Battalion) in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
Anderson is Tompkins County director of the Finger Lakes Assn. and has just been elected to a three-year term as a Chamber of Commerce director in the Tourist Division. His other affiliations Include Finger Lakes Post 961, Veterans of Foreign Wars; Ithaca Lodge 666, Loyal Order of Moose; Local 241, Electricians Union, and Tompkins County Hotel and Restaurant Assn. Anderson Is married to the former Edith Clark of Johnson City."
