Major League Baseball Player, Manager. For seventeen seasons (1936 to 1937, 1939 to 1943, 1945, 1947 to 1955), he played at the shortstop, second-base and third-base positions with the Cincinnati Reds, Boston Braves, Philadelphia Athletics and Boston Red Sox. Born Edwin David Joost, he attended Mission High School (San Francisco) and marked his Major League debut with Cincinnati on September 11th, 1936, appearing in 13 games that year. He experienced a world championship as a member of the 1940 Reds' squad and recorded 5 hits, with 2 RBIs and a .200 batting average during the 1940 World Series. His career was interrupted while he served with the US Military during World War II. In 1949, Joost produced career-highs in home runs with 23, runs scored with 128 and RBIs with 81, as he earned All-Star honors that year while with the Athletics. In 1952 he achieved All-Star status a second time, as he hit 20 home runs, while driving in 75 runs that season. In addition Joost was a patient hitter, as he exceed 100 base-on-balls six consecutive times (1947 to 1952). In 1954, he succeeded Jimmy Dykes as manager of the Philadelphia Athletics and served as a player-manager that year, compiling a 51 win and 103 loss record. Joost holds the distinction as the last manager of the Athletics, prior to the franchise's relocation to Kansas City. In 1,574 career regular season games, he amassed 1,339 hits and 1,043 walks, with a .239 lifetime batting average. Following his baseball career, he resided in Hawaii and worked in the sporting goods industry.
