CIVIC LEADER JULIAN HARRIS DIES AT 89 -

Funeral for Julian Harris, 89, of Decatur will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ken A. Dunivant officiating and Roselawn Funeral Home directing.

Burial will be in Decatur City Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church Thursday from 2 to 3 p.m.

Mr. Harris died Tuesday. He was born in what is now Old Decatur on December 10, 1904 to Augustus J. Harris and Edith West Harris.

He was a renowned Decatur lawyer, a civic leader and a member of First United Methodist Church. He attended the Alabama Polytechnic Institute, which is now Auburn University, and entered law school at the University of Virginia, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, Order of the Coif and the Raven Society. He was instrumental in the formation of the local Salvation Army and the United Way and was an active Rotarian.

He is survived by his wife, Genevieve Williams Harris; two sons, David C. Harris of Decatur and A. Julian Harris of Madison; one daughter, Noel Harris Shinn of Decatur; a brother, Norman West Harris; and eight grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be partners of Harris, Caddell and Shanks, P.C.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Julian Harris Lend-a-Hand Sunday School Class, which Mr. Harris taught for 50 years, and Reba Wadsworth, principal of Julian Harris Elementary School.

Memorial may be made to First United Methodist Church, the Decatur General Foundation or a favorite charity.
