Olzie Eliza Whitehead was born 1831 in Pactolus, Pitt County, NC, the 3rd of 7 known surviving children (4 boys/3 girls) born to farmers Howell Gray Whitehead, Sr. and his (1st) wife, Elizabeth Clark.

She was the paternal grandchild of Joseph Whitehead III and Sarah "Sallie" Gray of Halifax/Edgecombe Co; and gr-grandchild of Joseph Whitehead II and Pheraby Applewaite/Applewhite of Halifax Co. She is a direct descendant of Arthur Whitehead of Isle of Wight, VA, whose grandson, Col. William Whitehead first came to Edgecombe Co, NC in the early 1700's. On her mother's side he was the maternal grandchild of James Sampson Clark Sr. of Isle of Wight VA who came to Pitt Co, NC and married Winifred Hardy.

Olzie married John Beeke Williams about 1851, of whom no further information was found. It is known she was widowed early in her marriage, and never remarried. She had 2 known children: Lattimer "Lat" Williams (1852-1939) and Susan "Sudie" Williams (1854-1890). The widow, Olzie Whitehead Williams was known to have been in Wilson ca. 1870 where she earned her living as a milliner.

Both her children would marry and remain in Wilson. Son, Lat Williams, married Emily Estelle Davis in 1882 and had 2 known children. Daughter, "Sudie" married married James E. Clark in 1877 and was mother to 2 surviving children. She and he husband both died young, and it is believed that Olzie raised her children to maturity.

Olzie Whitehead Williams died in 1896 at age 64. She is buried near the Whitehead family in Maplewood.

Today, her name lives on through her home -- the "Olzie Whitehead Williams House" an Italianate-styled Victorian built circa 1860 on SR 1332, near Lake Wilson, which was one of the first 6 structures designated in Wilson's Historic District in 1977. The house was later added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 19, 1983.
