George H. Ferris, 83, of Grand Island died Saturday, April 9, 2011, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

George was born on Dec. 6, 1927, near Archer to Lee J. and Eva (Hathaway) Ferris.

Survivors are: wife, Kathryn Ferris of Grand Island; daughters, Barb (Alan) Anderson of Van Meter, Iowa, and Jan Ferris (Laurie Jones) of St. Paul, Minn.; seven grandchildren, and sister, Iris Metz of Oregon.

George grew up on a farm near Archer and graduated from Central City High School in 1945. He continued his education at Nebraska Wesleyan University, graduating in 1949.

He was united in marriage to Kathryn L. Bonness on June 21, 1953, at Archer. The couple lived on the family farm.

George was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church, where he was very active and held numerous church offices. He was also involved with many community projects.

In 2000, the couple moved to Grand Island, and George got involved with a carving club. He also enjoyed his garden and delivered tomatoes to everyone in his neighborhood.

George was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Rex and Elwin Ferris, and sister, Vivian Sander.
