(written in 2017 by Nelda Spurlock Arnold with the assistance of his son Donald Holland)
Willie Paxton Holland passed away at his home in Meadville on Wednesday, June 17, 1942, at the age of 53, after a lengthy illness.
He had never been one to go to the doctor much, but he eventually went to one in New Orleans, who was a relative of his. He came back home and was seemingly better for a short time, but soon after grew worse.
Willie was a farmer for most of his life but later owned a log truck and went into the logging business, where he employed his older sons, who cut logs and his son, Joe drove the mules. His son, Donald, who was only 12 when his dad died, remembers his dad as being “pretty much serious minded and all business”.
Willie always went to church and made sure that the kids went. They rode a wagon to church until later years, when he loaded up his wife and the children that were still at home into the log truck to go to church.
Willie Paxton Holland was survived by his widow, the former Ethel May Gammill and his ten sons, Lamar (29), Stewart (27), Sidney (26), Bertram (24), Joe (22), Robert (20), Donald (12), Aaron James (10), Jack (9), and Leslie (2), and one daughter, Alice Holland (18).
