Carolyn J. Legel, age 61 of Clinton, died Thursday, August 14, 2003 at Genesis West Medical Center in Davenport. Funeral services will be Monday 10:30 A.M. at the Pape Funeral Home; Pastor Michael Harmon of the Open Bible Fellowship Church officiating. Visitation will be Sunday 4-8 P.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Pallbear-ers will be Merle, John and Zach Lawrence, Michael McNeal, Merle Lawrence Jr., Leland Pettyjohn and Murvin Leach. Honorary pallbear-ers will be Evan and Paige Harmon.
Carolyn was born November 3, 1941 in Albia, Iowa, the daughter of Clifford and Erma (Van Gilder) McNeal. She married Merle E. Lawrence in 1960 in Clinton. She later married Robert Legel on November 13,1971 in Thomson, Illinois. She was a homemaker and a Hospice Volunteer. She was baptized at the Evangelical Free Church and was associated with the Assembly of God Church, Church of the Open Door, and the Salvation Army. She was very active with A.A. and the American Federation of Women, where she served as President. She was a member of the Clinton Women's Club and the Eagles Club. She was a volunteer for the Victory Center and cared for several elderly friends. She was known for Carol's Hospitality Service and was planning to run for Mayor in this year's election.
Carolyn is survived by her husband Robert; daughter-Mrs Cheryl (Michael) Harmon of Clinton; two sons- Merle (wife Kay) Lawrence and John Lawrence both of Clinton; two step daughters-Dori Liggins of Clinton and Bobbi Sue Legel of Fulton, Illinois; four grandchildren- Merle, Jr., Zach, Evan and Paige; three Step grandchildren- Dru, Ian and Kimerlee; nine sisters- Mrs. Patricia (Murvin) Leach of Ottumwa, Marsella Malone of Clinton, Mrs. Jaye (John) Morrow of Louisa, Kentucky, Mrs. Grace (Paul) Hansen of Houston, Texas, Mrs. Diane (Leland) Pettyjohn of Leighton, Iowa, Jean Reno of Kenosha, Wisconsin, Judy McNeal of Ottumwa, Mrs. Deborah (Tim) Gray of Rochelle, Illinois and Renay Davis of Apple Valley, California; five brothers - Dave McNeal of Oskaloosa, Iowa, James (his wife Myrna) McNeal of Omaha, Nebraska, Bill (his wife Bonnie) McNeal of Ottumwa, Iowa, Don "Butch" (his wife Nancy) McNeal of Sigourney, Iowa and Darrel McNeal of Clinton; and a special prayer friend Joey Reedy. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother -Danny, and a great nephew - Shaun Jacobsen. Memorials may be given to the Salvation Army or Mercy Hospice.
