U.S. Senator. He was a cousin of U.S. Senator Henry A. Du Pont, was educated at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, engaged in engineering, manufacturing and moved to Wilmington, Delaware, in 1900. There he was president of the E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company, (1902-15). Entering politics, he was a member of the Republican National Committee and was appointed as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Josiah O. Wolcott, serving (1921-22). He was reelected as a Republican to the United States Senate in 1924 and served until his until his resignation due to health issues in 1925. He died from cancer at age 66.
