Elizabeth Starkie Houston, the daughter of Isaac Thomas Houston born in North Carolina, and Lucy Ann Cosby born in Georgia was born in Tallahassee, Leon County, Florida in 1853. Her grandfather, Thomas H Cosby, was killed in the Texas Revolution at Goliad with Colonel Fannin's command. He was a volunteer soldier from Georgia. Due to his war service, his heirs received a grant of approximately 5000 acres of land in Texas. This is what brought the family to Texas. At the age of 6 or 7 years she moved with her family to Grimes County, Texas in ca 1859 where her father operated a large cotton plantation and was a Baptist Preacher in Anderson, Texas. After the war, and due to a Yellow Fever epidemic, the family moved to Bryan in Brazos County where her father was a full time preacher. In ca 1872 she married Jacob Marion Lindley who was born in Missouri and came to Texas as a boy in ca 1842. He was a civil war Veteran. His father Eli Lindley accumulated a lot of land in various parts of Texas, but primarily in Hopkins County. They lived in Corsicana, Navarro County, Texas where they had one child born in 1874. Jacob died in 1873 before his son was born. Elizabeth and the child moved in with her sister and family, Samuel Rhydon Mays in Dallas Texas. Her son Marion died in 1880 and is buried next to her first husband in Corsicana. Elizabeth married again to Samuel Francis Spencer in 1882 and became the mother of three daughters who all became public school teachers. In 1904, her second husband died in Yukon, Oklahoma and is buried there. In 1928 one of her daughter died in Dallas, and she and the other two daughters moved to California where Elizabeth died in 1932.
