US Congressman. Born in Fort Dodge, Iowa, his family moved to Elmira, New York in 1866. Graduating from Syracuse (New York) University, he established a printing and newspaper business in Penn Yann, New York, eventually becoming the editor of the “Yates County Chronicle”. He moved to New York City, New York in 1893, and became successful as an advertiser. In 1910 he ran for and was elected as an Independent Democrat to represent New York’s 18th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, and served a single term from 1911 to 1913. Unsuccessful in his attempt to be elected for a second term, after leaving Congress, he pursued agricultural and real estate concerns. He passed away in New York City, New York in 1929.
