Civil War Union Brigadier General. A Havard-trained lawyer and a Minnesota State Senator, soon after the beginning of the Civil War he enlisted in the Union Army as a Private and was commissioned Captain in the 3rd Minnesota Volunteer Infantry. He surrendered after a fight near Murfreesboro, Tennessee in October 1862 and was taken prisoner. After his exchange, he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 3rd Minnesota and was present in the operations that resulted in the capitulation of Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1863. Promoted to Colonel and commander of the unit in July 1863, he served in the campaign that resulted in the capture of Little Rock, Arkansas and was placed in command of the brigade. During 1864, he was in command of the forces at Augusta, was promoted Brigadier General, US Volunteers in command of the II Division, XIII Corps and participated in the siege at Fort Blakely, Alabama. In March 1865, he was brevetted Major General, US Volunteers, commanded the district of Mobile, Alabama and later that of Houston, Texas until the end of the war. After the war, he was appointed minister resident to Sweden and Norway, serving 1869 to 1877. From 1880 to 1885, he was supervisor of the United States census in the 3rd district of Minnesota and was Consul-General to Brazil.
