KHT was a wholesale hardware firm which sold a complete line all over the midwest and northwest. He rose to be sales vice-president. Robert Berg Rhode called him a "damn good salesman." After leaving KHT he sold pipe fittings in Minneapolis. There is a story that he received his name by being born at sea during a storm while his mother was enroute to the United States. The truth of this story is not known, but appears unlikely since his parents came to the United States in April or May of 1885 and he was not born until August of 1887, over two years later.
