Philip Henry Welty, for many years one of Pekin's prominent business men and leading citizens, passed way this morning at 10:15 o'clock at his home, 310 South Capital street, after an illness extending over many months.
While it is well known that his condition was serious, his passing came as a great shock to the people of this community, all of whom held him in the highest esteem.
He was born in Pennsylvania, March 22, 1841 and was past 81 years of age.
Mr. Welty was one of the pioneer businessmen of this city. for years he successfully conducted a millinery store here being one of the early leaders in that line in this section of the state. He was a pleasant and agreeable man, jovial, generous and kind and he enjoyed an acquaintance that was most general throughout this locality.
He was a veteran of the civil war having seen much active service during the dark days of the war or rebellion. He was a member of the G.A.R. and had been honored by the organization on many occasions.
His marriage which occurred at Oxford, Ohio, was to Miss Mary E. Bourgoin in 1866. Mrs. Welty died a few years ago. One son, Charles Welty of this city survives.
Mr. Welty had for the past few years lived a retired life.He was a lover of the outdoor sport and found especial delight in boating and fishing until he was taken ill, Jan. 20, 1921 this pastime afforded him much pleasure and enjoyment.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
