Braxton's car overturned on the highway in Black Rock, Arkansas, on July 5 , 1937. As a result of the accident, he experienced lower extremity paralysis. He eventually developed nephritis and died later the same year. He was married to Bernice (Oliver), and had been employed as a merchant. He was preceded in death by his father Braxton P. Herring and survived by his mother Ethel (Weaver) Herring.
