She was baptized at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Arlington, Minnesota on June 15, 1873, as Clara Emma (which is also what her birth certificate states), but she always went by Emma Clara. She attended all eight grades of public school (there was no high school at the time) and sang with a choral group. Around 1900 she and her sister Augusta travelled to Yolo County, California, to visit family friends, the Roths. (Augusta later married William Roth.) At home, Emma worked as a seamstress, and made elaborate and stylish bridal gowns. After her marriage on September 28, 1905, she and her husband Edward Spannaus moved to Stuttgart, Kansas, for reason's of Ed's health. An infant daughter was stillborn in Kansas in 1906, and daughter Arline was born in 1908. In 1909 they moved to Loveland, Colorado, where son Ruben was born in 1913. In 1920 the family moved to Woodland, California, where Ed built their house, and where they lived for the rest of their lives.
After her husband Ed died in 1956, Emma continued to live in their house and keep house, until she broke her hip at 101 years of age. At that point she had to move to a nursing home, where she died when she was about three months short of reaching 102 years.
She was well-known as the oldest fan of the Oakland A's -- and never missed listening or watching a game. On her 100th birthday, she received congratulations from President Richard Nixon and Governor Ronald Reagan.
