"Amelia Ann Nelson, 1928-2018," Lodi (WI) Enterprise, 8 February 2018, A2

Amelia Ann Nelson (Thompson) left this world on January 28th at St. Anthony's Hospital in Rockford IL. Her three daughters were by her side. She was preceded in death earlier that day by her son, Richard. Amelia was born in Lodi WI on August 16, 1928. She grew up on the family farm with her mother Frances (Herr) Thompson, her father Frank (Loper) Thompson, and big brother Donald Thompson. Her lifelong love of animals began at an early age. Amelia grew up riding ponies, farming with draft horses, and raising cattle and dogs. She was the first girl to ever win the state showmanship award with her beloved shorthorn steer. As a child Amelia enjoyed being a member of 4H and Job's Daughters. Always beautiful and charming, she was a sorority princess and runner up "Alice in Dairyland" as a young woman. She continued to be active in Eastern Star, League of Women Voters, NRA, curling and bowling leagues, and bridge clubs. Bright and inquisitive, Amelia was an avid reader, a vivid writer and a great storyteller. Amelia received her teaching degree from University of Wisconsin - La Crosse. She took great delight in teaching at the Gibralter one room school house. Amelia eloped with her true love Henry Robert Nelson on August 13, 1950. They had four children: Deborah (Tim Garber), Richard, Julie (Jay Larsen) and Joni (Chuck Firth). Amelia made life easy and fun for her family despite frequent moves with four kids, horses, cats and dogs. Amelia and Henry, adventuresome and fearless, went far together. They traveled throughout the U.S. and across the world. Always cosmopolitan and open minded, they were at home wherever they went. They found their true happiness in their beloved hometown of Lodi and ultimately at their home on the beach in Florida. Amelia was a loving, generous, enthusiastic and very involved Nana to six grandsons: Sam and Ezra Garber, Ben Larsen, Henry, Max, and Willy Firth and two great grandsons Enzo and Theo Garber. In recent years Amelia lived with her son Richard. They were great companions and tenderly cared for each other until their final day. Amelia was preceded in death by her husband Henry in 1989, her brother Donald in 2008, and her son-in-law Tim in 2013. Amelia will be remembered by her friends and family, as a champion of the underdog, a protector of animals and children. She found her own courage defending others. We will never forget her indomitable strength and invincible spirit. Visitation will be from 1-2 pm on Sunday, February 11 at the First Lutheran Church of Lodi. A celebration of life for Amelia and her son Rick will follow. Memorials to bestfriends.org or to a local humane shelter are greatly appreciated. Online condolences may be made at www.gundersonfh.com.
