German Writer. He revolutionized German poetry with his wit and lyricism, leading it from the dark, seriousness judging of Goethean classicism. His poetry particularly inspired romantic composers, notably Schumann, and he has become one of the poets most frequently set to music. Of Jewish birth, (which often shows through in both his autobiographical and satiric writing), his work was suppressed during the Nazi era. Died after a long illness: on being asked whether he feared death, he replied 'God will forgive me; that's his job'.
