Louis Tarke was the son of West Butte pioneers Frederick & Mary Tarke. He took charge of family farming and ranching operations in 1876 at the age of 20, while his parents visited Missouri and Iowa. They retired 9 years later to travel Europe and visit their birthplaces and Louis then took complete charge. He built a two-story villa style home on West Butte Road in 1856.
