Abraham Van Meter was the 5th son of Col Jacob Van Meter (1764–1825) and his wife Tabitha Inskeep (1767–1851). Jacob was the son of Col Garrett, and grandson of Isaaac Van Meter who was scalped by Indians near Fort Pleasant, Hardy Co, VA (now WV)

Note: His headstone reads "ABRAHAM Van Meter born 24 Sep 1807 Hardy Co, VA". Given name and Birthdate are contradicted by 'Genealogies and sketches of some old families...' by B F Van Meter, which refers to him as "Abram Van Meter ...born 24 Sep 1804"

Abraham was married 21 Jun 1827 in Hardy Co, VA to his cousin, Elizabeth Ann Van Meter, daughter of David Van Meter and his wife, Hannah Cunningham. David was the son of Isaac, who was the elder brother of Col Jaoob Van Meter.

Abram and his family moved to Fayette Co, KY about 1837/38 to the farm where Col Thos Lewis had lived and died… and there spent the balance of their lives.

They had ten children; seven lived to be grown:
• John 1828, died as a young man.
• Jacob 1829 & Elizabeth McDaniel
• James 1832 & Fannie Lewis
• Samuel 1834 & Mary Pamela Whitney. Moved to IL
• William Cunningham 1836-1915 & Mary Sudduth
• Hannah Tabitha 1841-1887 & Chas C. McDaniel. Moved to IN.
• David Cunningham 1845–1930 & Julia Clay Kennedy
• Elizabeth Ann 1849 & J.C. Galbraith. Moved to Kansas.

"Abram and his wife...were influential members of the Presbyterian Church. He was chosen an elder of the first church in Lexington soon after he came to Fayette County, and he took a very active part in religious affairs up to the time of his death, which occurred in 1864. His widow survived him only a short time, dying in the same year." (B F Van Meter)
