Bernice Crow McGehee
After a long and fruitful life, Bernice Crow McGehee passed away on March 20th, 2011. She was dearly loved by her family and friends and will be greatly missed. We will especially miss her southern charm and her unique remedies for what ails you.
Bernice was born on April 15th, 1919 near Morrilton, Arkansas to Harry and Flossie Culberson. Bernice married the love of her life, Roy Odis Crow on September 10th, 1938, they homesteaded acreage in the hills outside of town. She gave birth to her first son, Gary on February 7th, 1942, soon after that they moved to Napa, California, so Odis could work in the shipyards during the war. Bernice gave birth to her daughter Betty Louise on September 3rd, 1944 in Napa.
After WWII ended, the Crow family moved back to Arkansas, the old Ford broke down in Oatman, Arizona. Odis worked all night on the car, while Bernice, Gary and Betty stayed in the famous Oatman Hotel, in which the newlyweds Clark Gable and Carole Lombard stayed. After arriving in Arkansas and farming for 6 months, Odis came home one night announcing he had sold the cow and they were moving back to California.
After moving to Visalia, Bernice gave birth to John on July 22nd, 1951. In 1952, the family moved to Santa Maria. Odis passed away suddenly December, 1967. Bernice went to work at Erma's 88 cent store. After corresponding with her old childhood friend for a few years, Bernice married Liston McGehee in October 1970, unfortunately she was widowed 4 years later. Bernice injured her back during these years leaving her with chronic back pain.
For the last 6 years she has been a resident of Country Oaks Care Center, where she received excellent care. We would like to thank all of the wonderful staff for their warm and loving care.
Bernice is survived by her three children: Gary Crow (Linda) of Kingman, Arizona, Betty Frick (Dave) of Santa Maria, California, and John Crow of Kingman, Arizona. She was blessed with six grandchildren: Christie Crow-Wells (Ron), Gary Crow, Jr, Cindy Chenoweth (Steve), Heather Goldsmith (Karl), Johnny Crow (Natalie) and Chad Crow (Mary). She was also blessed with 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister Christine Brown (JB) of Morrilton, Arkansas.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Charlie Culberson, and sisters Alice Walker and Winnie Chenault.
There will be a graveside service held on Friday, March 25th, at 11:00 A.M. at the Santa Maria Cemetery.
