Chris Long

Died on Tuesday, Jan 13th, Chris Long, at his home in Liberty township, aged 67 years. The funeral was held on the 14th inst., and the remains buried in the Carter cemetery.

Some time ago deceased sustained injuries from a fall in his mill, which are thought to be the cause of his death. He was an old and well known citizen of the county.

A son of Chris Long and a daughter of Emanuel Coucher died - 4/7/1881 Porter County Vidette -- They are buried together behind Hopkins garage on Tratebas Rd south of 250 East, by the Long/Tratebas Mill, at the back of the old Coucher property. Lillies mark the spot per Johnny Gray. When the Long/Tratebas Mill dam washed out in August 1923, the neighbors had to fix the dam. Johnny Gray and Carl Olson (neighbors) were a part of the work crew. They went to up the grave site and no more. So, garage is on the lower dug out area. Just back of the garage on higher ground is where the children were buried.

Dr. Marr, of Chesterton, was here Tuesday and reported in the vicinity of Long's Mill, north of this city and south of Chesterton, several cases of spotted fever. A son of Mr. Chris Long, aged about 12 years, was first attacked on Friday night and survived three days. The next was that of Robert Cuppinaugh, an old resident, who lived under the dread disease only about 48 hours. The third is a daughter of Emanuel Coucher, about 13, who was taken on Saturday. At the time of our advice she still lives, but without hope for recovery. The doctor attributes the prevalence of the disease in that neighborhood to some local malaria from an unknown source.

The daughter of Emanuel Coucher (I think her name was Ella), who was reported in our last issue as lying at the point of death from spotted fever, survived but a short time after the departure from her bedside of our informant.
