Memories of Grandfather John (Isaac) Price.
Author unknown at the present time.

John (Isaac) Price was the son of John Price and Ann Cook Born - 10 May 1830/ 31 at Gladestry, Radnor, Wales or Hereford, England

He was the youngest of a family of sixteen children (all boys but one, this sister's name was Mary. She is said to have died of smallpox.

Some of the names of his brothers as he told them to us as children were: John, William, Thomas, Philip, Joseph, James, Mary, Isaac and Jackie. Jackie was a nickname for himself as he had an older brother John.

This family was acquainted with both English and Welsh customs, one of which was to attend church regularly on Sunday. Jackie blacked all the shoes for the family on Saturday night that they may be ready for church on Sunday morning. Eighteen pairs of shoes all shined and set in a row ready to attend church on Sunday morning, He would say.

John, the father, was a coal miner by trade and also mended shoes. When on his death bed he called all his family around him and gave each a message. To Isaac he said, “Isaac my son! Set your house in order for you shall die and not live", But my son John, you shall live to see the winding up of all the Price’s

We do not know how many of the family that emigrated to America. Jackie, Thomas, George, and Isaac are thought to have settled in New York City where Isaac is thought to have died soon after his arrival. George went to Georgia where he worked in the maple sugar industry. He died from burns received while at work. Jackie worked in the lumber industry along the Hudson, St. Laurence, Ohio, and Mississippi Rivers and where ever he could find employment. While in New York City he worked in a bakery. We as children used to play with the three cornered knives he said he used to scrape the bread vats.

Uncle John said grandfather told him he married Mary Ann Wingrove in St. Louis Missouri.
After his marriage he lived in Cincinnati, and Dayton, Ohio. Where our father [Isaac Thomas Price] and his sister Margaret Caroline were born. The third child John Richard was born in New York City. They must have made a trip to New York City just before they came West. Grandfather said Mary Ann had a brother Jacob who lived there. We have a picture of him. We also have a bible that once belonged to Margaret Parker and Jacob gave it to Mary Ann. This is written on the fly leaf. Grandfather said John Richard died on the plains of Cholera.

Grandfather told us how he remembered Samuel L. Clements (Mark Twain) as pilot of a boat which made trips up and down the Mississippi river when he was working at different points along the river.

He told us he affixed the name (Isaac) to his name after the death of his brother Isaac because he was his favorite brother. One would think he had not done this before he joined the L.D.S. Church by the dates on the record.
