John A. Petska, 73, 2122 Michigan Ave., Manitowoc, died of a heart attack at
his home early Monday morning.
Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Urbanek and Schlei Funeral
Home, Manitowoc. The Rev. Donald T. Stannard will officiate and burial will
be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc, where graveside rites will be performed
by members of Drews-Bleser American Legion Post 88.
Mr. Petska was born Sept. 19, 1893, in the Town of Franklin, Kewaunee County,
son of the late Joseph and Anna Chizek Petska.
He attended rural elementary schools, was graduated from Lincoln High School,
Manitowoc, in 1914, studied for two years at Oshkosh State Teachers College
and took his bachelor’s degree in business administration at the University of
Chicago in 1918.
From Aug. 14, 1918, to July 8, 1919, he served as a private first class in the
United States Army.
He married Ella Wanish June 25, 1920. The couple located at Brookpart, Minn.
Subsequently, Mr. Petska taught in North and South Dakota colleges for 11 years,
operated a general store at Maribel for 19 years, and was a Manitowoc real
estate dealer the past 20 years.
He was a member of Drews-Bleser Post 88, Veterans of Foreign Wars Otto Oas Post
659, World war I Barracks, ZCBJ Lodge of Rosecrans, Manitowoc Senior Citizens
Club, Maribel Sportsmen’s Club and Oshkosh Alumni Assn., of Wisconsin State
Universities
Surviving are his wife and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by six
brothers and a sister.
Friends may call at the funeral home N. Ninth Street entrance after 3 p.m.
Tuesday.
