Edith Jane Faires was born in 1869 in Haywood County, Tennessee to George Washington Faires and Elizabeth Frances Gragson. She grew up there and married James Mulligan, son of Irish immigrants, on January 9, 1895.

Edie and James had 7 children between 1897 and 1916 -- Rosa Bell, Flossie, James Thomas, Faires G., Judith Bell, Woodrow, and Edith Virginia. They reared their family in Haywood County. Edie's husband died in 1929 and was buried in Chestnut Grove Cemetery. By that time she had only two minor children left at home -- teenagers, Woodrow and Edith. Daughter Rosa was a single adult working as a grocery store clerk, and she, Edie, Woodrow, and Edith Virginia lived together. Woodrow worked their rented farm.

Edie died in 1939 and was buried beside her spouse at Chestnut Grove where her parents were also buried.
