Widow of Reporter's Founder Dies in Colorado
Mrs. Harriet Ellen Harper, widow of the founder of the Daily Reporter, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Zoe Stentz, in Colorado Springs Saturday afternoon, according to word received here by her sister Mrs. B. F. DeVore.
Mrs. Stentz, accompanying the I body, will reach here Tuesday afternoon. Burial will be made in Mt. Hope cemetery beside the husband, but funeral arrangements will not be announced until Mrs. Stentz reaches here.
Harriet Ellen Craig was born April 2, 1840 in North Hampton, Ohio. She was married to Ralph Harper in 1861 at Wapakoneta, Ohio, and they came to Kansas in the early days, settling in this city. To this union three children, Zoe, Minnie and Charles, were born. Charles died last year at his home in Salina and Minnie passed away several years ago. Mr. Harper, after coming to Independence, established The Daily Reporter in August, 1881 and continued to publish it until about two years later when he disposed of his interests. At one time his son was the owner of the paper.
Mrs. Harper is survived by three granddaughters, Mrs. Ernest Wilkey of this city, Mrs. Dale Miles of Tulsa and Mrs. Bessie McCloud of Cheyenne, Wyo., in addition to her daughter and her sister.
