Carmela Alice (Foti) Tramonte died Friday, April 22, 1988. An Akron Area resident for many years, Carmela was born in the coastal town of Patti Sicily, inside of Messina. She and her family came to first to Jamestown NY and later to Akron, Ohio. While working in her father's store, she met her future husband and fellow store owner, Giacomo Tramonte.

As Giacomo later told the story, he was very impressed that this young girl could not only figure out change in her head, but she was able to manage her father's store all alone while he was gone. Giacomo was not a romantic. After meeting Carmela, who was only about fifteen at the time, he immediately asked her father if he could marry her! Her father explained that she was too young, come back in a few years when she is seventeen. Giacomo sat back and continued to mind his store alone for a few more years but came right back and asked for Carmela's hand again when she was a more respectable age.

She helped Giacomo build several companies, including C & A enterprises, a real estate firm, Tramonte Orchards, and Tramonte Distributing company. She continued to assist her sons in the management of the Tramonte Distributing Company into her old age.

Her membership included the Sicilian Club and St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church of Medina. She always had a picture of the pope hanging proudly in her dining room. She was a wonderful cook and held countless family meals at which everyone over the age of about seven would be served wine with dinner.

Preceded in death by her husband, Giacomo; sons Andrew and Joseph; Mrs. Tramonte is survived by children Dominic (Don), Jack Salvatore, and Antonina (Lee) Marino, all of Medina; Sisters Mrs. Jennie Gifford and Mrs. Anne Hoefel, both of Akron; 18 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.

Calling hours from 2 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Hennessy-Bagnoli Funeral Home, 936 N. Main St, Akron where wake services will be held at 8 p.m. Carmela would want everyone to be inconsolable with grief at her passing. Mass of the Christian burial Monday 11 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Medina, with Rev. Fr. Mark Suriano officiating. Entombment at the Tramonte Family Mausoleum at Holy Cross Cemetery. For those who wish, donations may be made to the order of the Poor Clares of Rocky River where her niece Angela Granada is a nun; or St. Francis Catholic Church building fund. , Medina.
