Lawrence Raymond McCracken, 94, of Caldwell, died at home of natural causes on April 6.
Lawrence was born on August 28, 1916, to Joseph and Bertha (Lawrence) McCracken in Cuba where his mother had served as a Friends Church missionary and his father was a manager in the sugar cane industry. His mother died of influenza in the 1918 epidemic. In 1923 his family returned to the United States, settling near Scotts Mills, OR. After graduating from high school, he attended Pacific College (now George Fox University) and Oregon State College. He married Lucile (Lehman) in 1940 and they farmed near Scotts Mills, OR, where they began their family. Lawrence, Lucile, and their three children moved in 1953 to rural Ontario, OR. Lucile died of cancer in 1960. Lawrence married Truellen (Trudy) Davis LeBaron in 1961. Their Ontario Heights 80-acre farm was their home until she passed away in 1997. Lawrence's career as a dairy farmer was that of a steward. Increasing the milk production from his Jersey cows, improving drainage, enriching the soil, and getting the most out of every piece of equipment was all a part of his care for the things entrusted to him. Farming was followed by work as a mechanic for local canneries and for Hollingsworth Implements. Later a contract mail route between Vale and Ironside, OR, satisfied his enjoyment of being behind the wheel. He sold his farm in 1997 and the following year he married Hazel Beeson Tuning and moved to Caldwell, ID. His Christian faith was an integral part of his life. As a committed member of the Friends Church, he served in many capacities within the three local Friends churches where he lived during his adult life. His service to Friends in the Northwest included work as treasurer for Twin Rocks Conference. He remembered with satisfaction the opportunity to assist with the purchase of a light plant for the mission work in Bolivia when he was a member of the Board of Missions for Friends in the Northwest. He will be fondly remembered for his sense of humor, gentleness, encouragement, quiet ways, plays on words, teasing, and his love of pie. His Christian convictions were nonnegotiable, but always expressed with kindness and humility.

He was preceded in death by his first two wives, sister Ruthanna Hampton, step-son Steve LeBaron, and granddaughter Trina McCracken.

He is survived by his wife Hazel, sister Maribeth Hampton (Marvin) of Newberg, OR, daughters Elma Witty (Ben) of Adrian, OR, Phyllis McCracken of Salem, OR, son Dan McCracken (Cynthia) of Newberg, OR, step-daughters Joyce LeBaron, Veida Wissler (Steve), Karen Turmes (Dan), and Eilene Harmon (Dave), step-sons Joe LeBaron (Ellie) and Kermit Tuning (Renee'), many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday April 12, 2011, 10:00 a.m., with viewing at 9:30 at Caldwell Friends Church. Interment will follow at Greenleaf Cemetery. Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be given to Caldwell Friends Church at 521 E. Elm Street, Caldwell, ID 83605-4871 or Scotts Mills Friends Church at P.O. Box 56, Scotts Mills, OR 97375-0056.
