Jesse L. Allman, 84, of Astoria, died Friday, July 19, 2002, at Prairie City Health Care Center in Prairie City.

He was born Sept. 28, 1917, in Dawson, Okla., the son of Robert and Cora Byers Allman. He married Ruth McFetridge in January of 1942, in Kahoka, Mo. She survives.

Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. David (Judy) Law of Astoria and Leona LaForett of Thornton, Colo.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Charles Mathis of Kewanee, Lowell Gregg of Napa, Calif., and Gene Gregg of Hillsboro.

He was preceded in death by one son, Henry "Butch" Allman and one brother, Donald Gregg.

He worked for the Village of Astoria, then later for the Illinois Department of Transportation in highway maintenance, retiring in 1980.

He was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the Hq and Hq Company, Maintenance Battalion. He fought in battles in Normandy, northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and central Europe.

He was a member of Astoria American Legion Post 25 and the Moose Lodge of Beardstown.

Services were Monday, July 22, at Shawgo Memorial Home in Astoria. Internment was in Astoria Cemetery with military rites provided by the Astoria American Legion Post 25.
