U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Trinity College in 1829, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1831 and commenced to practice law in Carrollton, Illinois, in 1833. He was a member of the Illinois State House of Representatives, (1851-53), judge of Greene County, (1854-58) and secretary-treasurer of the St. Louis, Jacksonville & Chicago Railroad, in 1858. He was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-fifth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Thomas L. Harris and served from January 4 to March 3, 1859. Not a candidate for election, he was the Carrollton circuit judge, (1867-73), a member of the Illinois State Senate, (1873-77) and practiced law until his death.
