Services are 1 p.m. Friday at Hodgson Funeral Home, Ltd., Rock Island. The Rev. Dr. Donald Batz will officiate. Burial is in National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Visitation is one hour prior to service time Friday. Memorials may be made to the University of Iowa in support of the Lappin Family Scholarship or to the American Heart Association.
He was born Aug. 14, 1911, in Mount Sterling, Ill., the son of Halmer and Bess (Curry) Lappin. He married Dorothy Davis Oct. 3, 1936, in Chicago. She died in 1995.
He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1933. He was on active duty with the Army during WWII and retired from the U.S. Army Reserves in 1971 at the rank of major.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Rock Island, the University of Iowa Alumni Association and the University of Iowa Presidents Club. He loved fishing and was an avid golfer with two highlights in his life: a hole in one and he shot his age when he was in his 80s.
He was employed at the Rock Island District Army Corps of Engineers, retiring in 1973 after 20 years.
Survivors (and spouses) include his son, Don E. (Mary Beth) Lappin, Rock Island; sister, Ruth Forth, Bloomington, Ill.; grandsons, Paul, Chicago, Jim (Kelly), Walford, Iowa; and one great-grandson, Adam. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, four brothers, and three sisters.
