John lied about his age when he enlisted, as told by his Great Grandniece Joan (Bear) Ogden. He was only 16 years old when he enlisted in 1865. He was a drummer for the short time he served with his older brother in Company G of the 8th Wisconsin Infantry, the famous "Eagle Regiment" that carried a live eagle, Old Abe with them into battle.
His brother Joseph was the Rock County Sheriff at the time John died. According to his Great Grandniece, Joan (Bear) Ogden, her Great Grandfather Joseph had a very ill man locked up in the jail, and he wasn't sure the man would live or not, so he asked John to stay in the cell with the man to watch and take care of him. John did so, and ended up contracting whatever disease the man was suffering from, which led to his untimely death at the young age of only 26.
His headstone, which became illegible, was replaced on Memorial Day, 2017 with a new replacement headstone.
