On February 3, 1880, Mary Ann married James Lawless at Jefferson, Dakota Territory. She and her husband had eleven children. A pair of their twins died in infancy; and, three of their children died during the diptheria epidemic of 1890.
Mary Ann was described as being an exceptional woman who always offered aid whenever a neighbor was sick. She was said to have been such a good woman that her death threw her entire area of town into mourning. All of her living children were at her bedside when she died.
