Moved to Missouri in 1840; mayor of Springfield in 1856; during the Civil War raised the 24th Missouri Infantry and served as colonel until his election to Congress; elected as an Unconditional Unionist to the Thirty-eighth Congress (March 4, 1863-March 3, 1865); appointed judge of the court of the fourteenth judicial district in 1865, and member of the Republican National Committee 1864-1868.
