Rev. Charles Barnes Hewlett, 76 years old, of Independence, Iowa, died on Saturday, October 24, 2009, at West Village Care Center in Independence following a short illness. He was born on May 26, 1933, in Kansas City, Kansas, the son of Willard Merriam and Michal Amanda Caroline (Rutherford) Hewlett, Sr. He graduated from high school in Hutchinson, Kansas, and on April 12, 1953, he and the former Esther Annalee Bland were married in Hutchinson, Kansas. Rev. Hewlett then served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge, he graduated (in 1960) from the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois.

Rev. Hewlett was 6 years old when his father became a minister. Rev. Hewlett entered the ministry on June 10, 1960. He and his family moved to Iowa in 1964 and he started preaching at the Pine Creek Mission Baptist Church (rural Independence) in November of 1965. He continued there for thirty-nine and a half years. Then, at the age of 71, he became an associate pastor at First Baptist Church in Independence. During his ministry, Rev. Hewlett also led services and/or Bible Studies at East Towne Care Center, West Village Care Center, the Buchanan County Health Center LTC, and Prairie Hills Assisted Living, all in Independence. He also was a volunteer for Pastoral Care at Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa.

Rev. Hewlett also owned and operated Raymond Printing in Independence from 1972 to 1995. He was a member of the Sheehan-Tidball American Legion Post #30 and the First Baptist Church, both in Independence. He may have slowed down as he aged, but he never retired.
