Millicent Charlotte McLeavy died April 4, 2011, at the Hester Care Center of Wesley Towers Retirement Community at the age of 102. She was one of twin daughters born to Francis L. and Sophia G. Tilberg Aspelin on Sept. 15, 1908, on a farm near Dwight, Kan., in Morris County.
She graduated from Dwight Rural High School in 1927, and attended Bethany College for two years before returning home to teach in a one-room schoolhouse south of Dwight for one year. Millicent then enrolled at Kansas State College (now Kansas State University) and completed her B.S. in Home Economics and General Science in 1932. She moved back to Dwight again and taught Home Economics and Biology for four years at her former high school.
On May 31, 1936, Millicent married John Conway McLeavy of Dwight at her parents' home north of Dwight. He died on Jan. 10, 1983. Millicent has been a resident of Hutchinson since 1938. She was a homemaker. She was a current member of the First Presbyterian Church and Chapter D of PEO, and former member of the Aquila Study Club of the Kansas General Federation of Women's Club, and the Carey Park Women's Golf Association. In her younger days she volunteered for the American Red Cross, and was a leader of Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. She enjoyed athletics, both as a participant and a spectator, and she was an avid gardener and bridge player. Millicent's twin sister, Mildred C. Nelson, of Lindsborg, Kan., died at the age of 101 on Nov. 11, 2009. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Leslie L. Aspelin; and by her younger sister, Fern I. Cole.
Millicent is survived by her son and wife, Robert and Janice McLeavy of Golden, Colo.; and by her daughter and husband, Marjory and Edward Johnson of Hutchinson. There are two grandchildren, Kristen Schiffner and husband Brooke of Denver, Colo., and Todd McLeavy Johnson and wife Kresta of New York City; and great-grandchildren, Braden and Annika Schiffner and Hollis and Rory Johnson.
Memorial service will be Friday, April 8, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Hutchinson, with Pastor H. Dick Reynolds Jr. of McPherson, officiating. Private family graveside services will be held at the Penwell-Gabel Cemetery and Mausoleum, Hutchinson. Friends may call Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Elliott Chapel.
