Moses Keokuk (Wunagisa) was principal chief of the Sac & Fox Nation at the time of the ceding of the tribal lands to the U.S. Government in 1891. After a series of removals to Iowa, Missouri and Kansas, the Sac & Fox were finally settled on part of the lands given up by the Creeks, between the Cimarron River and the North Canadian, primarily in present day Lincoln County. Keokuk oversaw the sale of these lands to the federal government which resulted in the land run of Sept. 22, 1891. Lincoln and Pottawatomie Counties date their beginning from this run.
