Vera M. Uhlman

Vera May Uhlman passed away at the Merry Heart Nursing Home of Boonton Township on Wednesday February 20, 2008, age 98 years and 3 months. Vera was born in Upper Chelsea, Nova Scotia to Nathaniel F. Uhlman Jr. and his wife, Mary Matilda Turner. Vera attended a one-room school in Upper Chelsea and went to school in Bridgewater, through the tenth grade.

She came to the United States about 1928. She was offered a job at the Walter E. Fernald School for underprivileged and special needs boys in Waverley, Massachusetts. At first she was an attendant, leading the boys from place to place. Sometime later she was asked to take a job as a Manual Arts Instructor, teaching them to work with tools. In the Weaving Room they made floor mats and brushes that were used in the school. She also taught caning, and crafts. In the summer she ran work crews of boys who weeded acres of vegetables--all for use in the school. In her last years there, she ran a Sheltered Workshop.

In 1959 Vera received a union award for her outstanding work with boys at W.E.F.S.S. going far beyond her call of duty. It was presented to her at the school by Governor Foster Furcolo of the State of Massachusetts. She retired in 1974, having loved the school, the boys, and her work. At that time she moved to Wharton, NJ to live with her sister, Ethel Worman. She continued to live in NJ after her sister's death in 1990.

Predeceasing her are her sisters: Myrtle McIntomney of Camperdown, NS and Ethel Worman of NJ and brother, Clyde Uhlman of Upper Chelsea, NJ. Survivors include her brother, Ralph and his wife, Ruth, of Upper Chelsea, NS. , Edith Worman Varga of Dover, NJ, Madeline U. Henley of Chelsea, NS., Linda U. Boland of Greenfield, NS, Brenda U. Knox, c/o Bridgewater, NS, Brian Uhlman of Chelsea, NS, Valerie U. Meisner, c/o Bridgewater, NS, Kerry U. Whynot, c/o Bridgewater, NS, Roy Uhlman of Chelsea, NS, Robert Uhlman of Chelsea, NS, as well as her sister in law Jean Uhlman of Nova Scotia. Vera was a fine daughter, sister, and friend and she will be remembered for her kindness and generosity.

Funeral services will be held Monday February 25, 2008 at 10:30 AM at the Smith Taylor Ruggiero Funeral Home #1 Baker Ave. (Rt. 46) Dover, NJ 07801. Interment will follow in the Locust Hill Cemetery Dover. Visitation will be at the Funeral Home Sunday Feb. 24th from 3-5 PM.
